Unable to connect

Saturday, January 20, 2007 - 20:29

Downloaded the latest version of Supreme Commander from Fileplanet (53). I create my username, after which it says

 "Logging in......"

This process takes a while, after which it says

"Unable to connect, please check your connection and try again"

But as I know my connection is in fact working, and I have no firewalls blocking my connection, this confuses me.

So I try to log in from the main screen, only to get the following message:

"That account is already logged in"

But as I just said... I was unable to log in after creating my account, so how come is it now telling me I can't login because I'm already logged in? Haven't been able to try the beta at all, and i've tried logging in using different versions from 30 and onward. Same problem. Solution please? Cause I really hope this problem doesn't persist, because if it does then unfortunately Supreme Commander won't be a game i'll be purchasing. No point buying it, if I can't even login.

EDIT: Borrowed a friends account that had access to the beta, but he doesn't use the account anymore. Same result when I try to login. First it tells me it is unable to connect, after which it says the account is already logged in.

Sounds like your connection is to blame, though if you've not got any firewalls then I can't think of anything off hand that would cause it. You wouldn't happen to be on a campus connection, would you? I find that mine causes that problem from time to time, and I just need a reboot before it'll let me conect.

You say "Egotistical meglomaniac" as if it's the first time I've been called that.

No, I am not on a "campus connection". This is my home connection, and the only game i've had problems connecting to the server is Supreme Commander/GPGNet. All other games work flawlessly with or without a firewall active.

So absolutely noone has a solution to the problem? Great support in these forums, I must say... Puzzled

Since you tried with your friend's account too, and it failed, we can easily speculate it's something with your machine.

Let's look at the "already logged in" comment first.
When that happens, close the comment and bring up the task manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and click on the PRocess tab and see if there is a GPGNet process running. If so, that's the source of the comment - despite not connecting, GPGNet is still running. You can kill the process.

Now, as to why it can't connect. Only two reason I can think of (knowning PCs, I'm sure there's more).
One is that you don't have Internet Explorer v6 or v7 installed, which it requires - but I don't believe you'd even see any part of GPGNet if that was the case.

The other is that the two ports required for GPGNet to communicate are being blocked. Those ports are 30340 and 30341, which need to be set for UDP communications.
These can be blocked by Microsoft's built-in firewall, a software firewall, your router, or anti-virus/anti-spam software.

Nake sure that Supreme Commander and GPGNet – Supreme Commander appears on your Windows Firewall exception list (Control Panel -- Windows Firewall -- Exceptions Tab), as well also showing up as exceptions in any third-party firewalls (including those in anti-virus and anti-spam software). This list is EXE-centric and since SupCom and GPGNet have different EXEs, you need both entries.

You can also try using a general-purpose port tester like the free Shields Up! to test your ports. Note that the matchmaking service also uses port 9103, and SupCom itself uses 6112 (both also set to UDP), but until you can get GPGNet working I wouldn't worry about those.

You'd get a lot more answers, I suspect, if you post in the Fileplanet beta testers forum. You should have gotten a link to that site in your email with the beta key.
